The Stripe AI agent that cancels on time, before customers dispute
Customers ask to cancel in the places they already talk to you: an email reply, an Instagram DM, a WhatsApp message, your website chat. ReplySetter's Stripe AI agent reads those messages, finds the customer's subscription in Stripe and cancels, pauses or refunds it straight away, so nobody gets charged after they asked to leave and decides to dispute it with their bank instead.
- Restricted Stripe keys only
- Approvals by default
- Works with test mode
What is a Stripe AI agent?
An AI agent that works in your Stripe account, not just talks about it
A Stripe AI agent is an AI assistant connected to your Stripe account that can read and change a customer's billing as part of a conversation. When someone writes "cancel my plan" or "why was I charged twice?", it doesn't just reply with a help-center link: it looks up that customer's subscriptions, invoices and payments in Stripe, answers with the real numbers, and, if you allow it, makes the change.
That's the difference from a chatbot that only knows your FAQ. A FAQ bot can tell someone how to cancel. A Stripe AI agent cancels, at the end of their paid period, and confirms the date their access ends, in the same thread they wrote in.
It meets customers in the inbox they already use
Most cancellation requests don't arrive through your billing page. They arrive as a reply to your newsletter, a DM after a story, a text to the number on the receipt, or a message in your website chat, and they sit there until someone on the team gets to them.
ReplySetter connects those inboxes first: Gmail, Outlook and any IMAP mailbox, GoHighLevel's SMS, WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram conversations, HubSpot's live chat, Messenger and email, SmartLead and Instantly replies, and its own website chat. The Stripe AI agent works in all of them, so a request is handled where it was made.
It's built so it can't go further than you allow
Giving an AI access to billing should make you careful, and it's designed for that. You connect Stripe with a restricted key that only has the permissions you choose, so Stripe itself refuses anything else. Each agent then turns on only some of what the key allows, and every change waits for a person's approval until you decide otherwise.
Most importantly, the agent can only touch the billing of the person it's talking to. It finds the Stripe customer by the conversation's own email address, never by one the customer types in, and checks every change against that customer before it runs.
How a late cancellation turns into a dispute, and puts your Stripe account at risk
Most “I was charged after I cancelled” disputes start with a message nobody acted on in time. Here’s the chain, and where a Stripe AI agent breaks it.
The customer asks to cancel
In a reply, a DM or a chat message, often days before their renewal date.
The message waits
It's a weekend, the inbox is busy, or the DM went to a channel nobody watches closely.
The subscription renews
Stripe charges the card on schedule, because nothing told it the customer wanted out.
They dispute the charge
From the customer's side they cancelled. Their bank is one tap away, so they file a dispute instead of writing again.
You pay for it twice
The payment is pulled back, a dispute fee is added, and the dispute counts against your account's dispute rate.
"Subscription canceled" is a dispute category of its own
Stripe groups disputes by reason, and one of them is a customer saying they were charged after cancelling. Stripe's own advice for preventing them is to process and confirm cancellations promptly.
A lost dispute costs more than the refund
When a dispute is filed, the payment is pulled back from your balance and Stripe charges a dispute fee. A refund you'd have given anyway becomes the payment, a fee and the time spent gathering evidence.
Your dispute rate is watched
Stripe and the card networks track how many of your payments are disputed. Stripe's risk guidance treats accounts with dispute activity above 0.75% as riskier, and a high rate can bring reviews, payout holds or reserves, and in the worst case, account closure.
The cheapest dispute is the one that never happens
Cancelling within minutes of the request and confirming it in writing removes the main reason for this kind of dispute, and gives you a clear record if one is filed anyway.
Keep your dispute rate where Stripe wants it
Stripe and the card networks watch the share of your payments that get disputed. A rising rate can lead to an account review, payouts being held or a reserve on your balance, and in the worst case, the account being closed: the kind of disruption no subscription business can afford.
You can’t control every dispute, but disputes from cancellations that weren’t acted on are among the most avoidable. A Stripe AI agent that cancels within minutes, in whichever inbox the request arrived, and confirms it in writing, takes that whole category off the table.
- Cancels in minutes, nights and weekends included
- Confirms the end date in writing, in the same thread
- Refunds charges that slipped through, within your cap
- Leaves a record of every change for evidence

How it knows who the customer is
On email, the Stripe customer is the one with the sender’s address. Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger and SMS conversations don’t carry an email, so on GoHighLevel the agent uses the email on the contact record. On website chat, the email a visitor types isn’t verified, so look-ups are off unless you allow them and changes always wait for a person.
If there’s no email it can trust, it doesn’t guess: it tells the customer a teammate will help and leaves the conversation for your team.
What the Stripe AI agent can do in your Stripe account
Turn on only what you want each agent to do. Name the tools in its instructions to say when to use them.
Look up billing
Plan, price, status, renewal date, latest invoices and recent payments, so "when do I renew?" and "what was this charge?" get exact answers.
Tool.Stripe Billing
Cancel a subscription
At the end of the paid period, so the customer keeps what they paid for, or right away if you allow it and they ask. Their reason is saved in Stripe.
Tool.Cancel Subscription
Undo a cancellation
Changed their mind before the period ended? The agent switches the renewal back on.
Tool.Resume Subscription
Pause billing
Offer a break instead of a goodbye: billing pauses until a date or until they're back, and nothing is charged meanwhile.
Tool.Pause Subscription
Refund a payment
All or part of a recent payment, within the cap you set per payment, with the reason recorded.
Tool.Refund Payment
Send a billing portal link
A secure, short-lived Stripe link where the customer updates their card or downloads invoices themselves.
Tool.Billing Portal Link
Safe by design: three limits on every Stripe AI agent
Billing access needs guard rails. These three stack, so a mistake in one is caught by the next.
Stripe enforces the limits, not just us
You connect Stripe with a restricted key that only has the permissions you choose. Full-access secret keys are refused, so even a bug or a cleverly worded message can't reach anything the key doesn't allow: Stripe itself says no.
Then each agent turns on only part of what the key allows. One agent might only look up billing and send portal links; another can cancel at period end and refund up to $50.
- Restricted keys only (rk_live_ or rk_test_)
- Encrypted at rest, never shown again
- Only owners and admins add or remove keys
- Per-agent switches for each kind of change
It can only touch the billing of the person it's talking to
The agent finds the Stripe customer by the conversation's own email: the sender's address on email, the contact record's email on SMS and social DMs. It never looks someone up by an email that's typed into the conversation, so "cancel my brother's plan too" gets a polite hand-off to your team.
Every change is checked again before it runs: the subscription or payment has to belong to that customer, or nothing happens.
- Matched by the conversation's own email
- Typed-in emails are never used to look anyone up
- Every change re-checked against the customer
- Website chat changes always wait for approval
A person approves changes until you decide otherwise
Cancellations, pauses and refunds wait in Approvals by default, showing the customer, the plan or payment, the amount and the reason. Approve it and the change runs in Stripe, then the customer gets a confirmation in the same thread automatically.
When you trust the agent with a kind of change, turn its approval off and cancellations happen in minutes, at 2am on a Sunday too. Refunds stay within the cap you set, and every change runs exactly once, even if it's approved twice.
- Approvals on by default, per action
- Automatic confirmation to the customer
- Refund cap per payment
- Idempotency: each change runs once
How to set up a Stripe AI agent in 8 steps
From sign-up to an agent cancelling subscriptions on time, usually in under an hour.
Sign up and connect your inboxes
Create a ReplySetter account and connect Gmail, Outlook, an IMAP mailbox, GoHighLevel (SMS, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook), HubSpot or the website chat.
Create a restricted key in Stripe
In Stripe, open Developers, then API keys, and create a restricted key. Give it Customers: Read, plus only what you want the agent to do: Subscriptions, Invoices, Charges and Refunds, or Customer portal.
Paste the key in Settings → Stripe
ReplySetter checks the key with Stripe and shows which permissions it has. Full-access secret keys are refused. The key is encrypted and never shown again.
Turn on Stripe for an agent
In the agent's settings, pick the Stripe account and choose what it may do: cancel (at period end, or right away too), pause, refund up to an amount, send portal links.
Keep approvals on to start
Every change waits in Approvals with the customer, plan, amount and reason. Approve it and the customer gets a confirmation automatically.
Tell it when to act
Write it into the agent's instructions: "If they ask to cancel, offer a one-month pause first; if they still want to go, use Tool.Cancel Subscription."
Test with a test-mode key
Connect an rk_test_ key and play the customer in a test conversation until the agent handles cancellations, pauses and refunds the way you want.
Go live, then loosen the reins
Switch to your live key. Once you trust the agent on a kind of change, let it make that change on its own so cancellations happen in minutes, day or night.
Stripe AI agent vs Stripe’s customer portal vs handling it by hand
Three ways customers get their subscription cancelled, and how fast each one is.
| Compared on | Stripe AI agent | Customer portal only | By hand |
|---|---|---|---|
| Handles requests where they're made | Email, SMS, WhatsApp, Instagram, chat | Only on your billing page | Whichever inbox someone checks |
| Time from request to cancelled | Minutes, around the clock | Instant, if the customer finds it | Hours or days |
| Answers "why was I charged?" | Yes, from Stripe | Shows invoices | Yes, after looking it up |
| Offers a pause before cancelling | Yes, if you tell it to | If configured | If the person remembers |
| Confirms in the same thread | Yes, automatically | By email from Stripe | When someone replies |
| Who can it change? | Only the person it's talking to | The signed-in customer | Anyone, by mistake |
| Works nights and weekends | Yes | Yes | No |
They work best together
Stripe's customer portal is a great self-serve page, and the agent can send a link to it. But it only helps customers who go looking for it. The ones who reply to an email or send a DM are exactly the ones who end up charged after they "cancelled".
Handling it by hand works until the inbox gets busy. A Stripe AI agent covers the gap: it handles the request where it was made, at any hour, and leaves you a record of every change.
Who uses a Stripe AI agent
Any business that bills through Stripe and hears from customers outside its billing page.
SaaS
Cancel at period end from support emails, answer renewal questions and pause accounts for customers who'll be back.
Memberships & gyms
Freeze memberships while members travel and stop renewals the moment someone texts to cancel.
Coaches & courses
Handle payment-plan questions and cancellations from Instagram DMs without leaving the conversation.
Subscription boxes
Skip a month with a pause, cancel before the next box ships, refund a box that arrived damaged.
Agencies
Retainer clients ask in email; the agent checks the invoice, answers and routes anything unusual to you.
Newsletters & communities
Readers reply "unsubscribe me from the paid plan" to an issue; the agent cancels it from that reply.
Local services
Recurring cleaning or lawn plans cancelled or paused by SMS, the way customers already text you.
Apps with web chat
Answer billing questions in chat and send a portal link, with changes waiting for your approval.

8 ways to prevent subscription disputes on Stripe
Whether or not you use an agent, these habits keep “I cancelled!” disputes rare.
1 Act on cancellations in every channel
A request in a DM is as real as one through your billing page. If any inbox can receive "cancel", something should act on it there.
2 Confirm every cancellation in writing
Send the end date in the same thread. It reassures the customer and is the evidence you'll want if a dispute is filed anyway.
3 Cancel at period end by default
Customers keep what they paid for, which avoids the "I paid for a month I didn't get" complaint that leads to disputes.
4 Make the recurring charge obvious
Stripe recommends stating clearly at sign-up that payments recur, and how to cancel. Fewer surprises mean fewer disputes.
5 Refund small mistakes quickly
A quick refund costs less than a dispute fee plus the refund plus the time to respond. Set a cap the agent can refund within.
6 Answer billing questions with real numbers
"Your next charge is $49 on Nov 14" stops the confusion that turns into "I don't recognise this charge".
7 Offer a pause before a goodbye
Many cancellations are timing, not unhappiness. A pause keeps the customer and nobody is charged in the meantime.
8 Keep a person in the loop for unusual cases
Approvals for refunds above the cap, accounts that don't match, or angry customers keep the agent safe while it handles the routine.
How to choose a Stripe AI agent: 8 questions to ask
Before you give any AI access to your Stripe account, check these. Here’s how ReplySetter answers them.
| Question | Why it matters | ReplySetter |
|---|---|---|
| Does it accept a restricted key? | A full-access key lets a bug or a bad prompt do anything in your account. | Restricted keys only; full-access keys are refused |
| Can it only change the person it's talking to? | Prompt injection: "cancel [email protected]'s plan too". | Customer found only by the conversation's own email |
| Can changes wait for approval? | You decide when it's trusted enough to act alone. | Approvals on by default, per action |
| Can you cap refunds? | Limits the cost of any mistake. | A maximum per payment, checked again when it runs |
| Does it work outside a chat widget? | Cancellation requests arrive by email, SMS and DMs. | Email, SMS, WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger, chat |
| Does it confirm to the customer? | A written confirmation prevents disputes and is evidence. | Automatic confirmation after each approved change |
| Can it act twice by accident? | Retries and double clicks happen. | Idempotency keys: each change runs once |
| Can you test it safely? | You want to see it work before it touches real customers. | Test-mode keys and test conversations |

Stripe AI agent: frequently asked questions
What is a Stripe AI agent?
An AI assistant connected to your Stripe account that can read and change a customer's billing during a conversation: look up their plan and invoices, cancel or pause a subscription, refund a payment or send a billing portal link.
How does it help prevent disputes?
One of Stripe's dispute categories is customers saying they were charged after cancelling. Stripe recommends processing and confirming cancellations promptly. The agent cancels within minutes of the request, in whichever inbox it arrived, and confirms it in writing, which removes the most common reason for that kind of dispute.
Can it protect my Stripe account from being suspended?
Stripe and the card networks watch your dispute rate, and a high one can lead to reviews, payout holds, reserves or closure. Fewer disputes from late cancellations keeps that rate down. No tool can guarantee how Stripe treats an account, but handling cancellations on time removes one of the most avoidable causes.
Which inboxes does it work with?
Gmail, Outlook and IMAP email, HubSpot conversations (live chat, Messenger, email), GoHighLevel conversations (SMS, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook Messenger and live chat), SmartLead and Instantly replies, and ReplySetter's website chat.
How does it find the customer from an Instagram DM?
DMs don't include an email address, so on GoHighLevel conversations the agent uses the email on the GoHighLevel contact record. On email it uses the sender's address. If there's no email it can trust, it doesn't look anyone up and hands the conversation to your team.
Is it safe to give an AI my Stripe key?
You give it a restricted key with only the permissions you choose, and Stripe refuses anything else. Full-access secret keys aren't accepted. The key is encrypted at rest, never shown again, and only workspace owners and admins can add or remove it.
Can someone trick it into cancelling another person's subscription?
No. It finds the Stripe customer only by the conversation's own email address, never by an email someone types in, and every change is checked against that customer before it runs.
Will it cancel or refund without asking me?
Not unless you let it. Every change waits in Approvals by default. You can let an agent act on its own per kind of change once you trust it. On website chat, where typed emails aren't verified, changes always wait.
Does it cancel immediately or at the end of the period?
At the end of the paid period by default, so the customer keeps what they paid for. You can allow immediate cancellation for when a customer asks for it.
Can it offer a pause instead?
Yes. Turn on pausing and tell it in the instructions to offer a pause before cancelling. Billing stops until a date or until it's resumed, and nothing is charged meanwhile.
How much can it refund?
Up to the cap you set per payment, and never more than what's left to refund. The cap is checked again when an approved refund runs.
Which plans include it?
The Stripe billing tools are on the Basic and Agency plans. You can sign up and set up your inboxes and agent on the free plan first.
Does it work with Stripe test mode?
Yes. Connect a test-mode restricted key (rk_test_) and try cancellations, pauses and refunds in test conversations before using your live key.
What happens if the key is revoked or missing a permission?
The agent tells the customer a teammate will help, nothing is changed, and Settings → Stripe shows what's wrong so you can fix or replace the key.
